Pros remember names and get people involved emotionally

Yesterday I read from the book 177 Mental toughness secrets that professional leaders know how to get people emotionally involved while amateurs only lead by logic. The exercise was to ask someone the question “Tell me what the most important thing to you?”  and then follow up with questions that continue to involve the person. Examples include “Why is that important to you?” “What would that feel like when you get there?”  “Why is that important to you?”

I tried it on my wife yesterday and she had a great “R” response “I just want everyone to get along.” Then she shared some negative emotions about some relational conflict in our lives. The book didn’t prepare me for that! It looks like being a good leader means you have to be able to handle negative emotion appropriately.

Last night I read in How to Win Friends about a guy named Jim Finely. He helped a president get elected because he knew 50,000 people by first name. During the campaign, he wrote letters to each individual. (I’m glad I remembered his name). Dale highlights how important someone’s name is to them. Pros focus on remembering people’s name. People do business with people who they know, like, and trust. If I don’t know their name, it means I don’t know them.

Oh Deer

I just heard a great story from Keith Otto (PFN: Incentive Trips: Freedom Tour 15:53). He said that in Berlin there are deer that would go up to where the wall used to be and they would turn around and walk away, even though on the other side is lush green grass. God designed us for success but we have been programmed for failure.

It’s time to reprogram with the right message.

I also read a great story in Napolean Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” pg 76. A gentleman named Gunsaulus had a vision of starting a school that focused on practical application and improving people’s quality of life. After a long time it finally became an obsession for him. What prevented him from realizing his dream was a million dollars. One morning he woke up and decided that he was going to get the million dollars in the next week (He was a preacher).  He wrote a sermon called “If I had a million dollars.” After delivering the message, he sat down to relax and a man 3 rows back got up and walked towards him. The man said “Meet me in my office tomorrow. I believe in you and I can help.” The man gave Gunsaulus his million dollars and he was able to start an institution that became Illinoise Institute of technology.

Wow the power of putting a date on your goals and believing that some how some way it is going to happen. I loved this story.
